03Project scope

Your project scope

Before work begins, you’ll receive a clear scope for your request. The scope is your plain-English agreement for what we’re actually doing.

You don’t need to figure this out yourself. We build it from the request you send us.

ContentsThe scope will include

  1. 01

What you’re asking us to accomplish

A straightforward description of the actual goal.

“Research the history of 123 Main Street, including ownership, documented uses of the property, major changes to the building, and what happened to the property after it closed.”

  2. 02

    What you’ll receive

We’ll describe the actual finished deliverables. For example:

    • Written research report
    • Source list and links
    • Relevant historical images
    • Timeline of major events
    • Short summary of findings

If something isn’t included, it won’t be quietly assumed to be included.

  3. 03

    What we’ll research or do

We’ll identify the work involved. For a historical property project, that might include:

    • County assessor records
    • Recorder / deed records
    • Historic maps
    • Newspaper archives
    • Preservation records
    • Historical photographs
    • Current imagery
    • Ownership history
    • Documented uses

The exact sources depend on what is available.

  4. 04

    What isn’t included

We’ll identify relevant boundaries before work begins. For example:

    • No entering private buildings
    • No trespassing
    • No original photography unless specifically arranged
    • No guaranteed access to restricted records
    • No legal conclusions
    • No guarantees that undocumented information can be verified

If you want something outside the original scope, you can ask.

  5. 05

    Price

The agreed price is shown before work begins. If the project changes substantially, we’ll discuss additional work and cost before doing it.

No surprise bill because the rabbit hole got deeper.

  6. 06

    Estimated completion

The scope includes the expected turnaround. The estimate is based on the scope and information available when the project begins.

  7. 07

    What we need from you

    Possible requirements:

    • Address
    • Names
    • Dates
    • Existing documents
    • Photographs
    • Links
    • Files
    • Additional background information

If you don’t have everything, we’ll tell you what is actually necessary.

  8. 08

    Changes to the project

Sometimes research uncovers something unexpected. If that changes the amount or type of work required, we’ll stop and explain what’s changed. You can:

    • Continue with the expanded scope
    • Keep the original scope
    • Stop the project

You remain in control of the request.

Eight lines. That’s the whole agreement.

No guessing. No hidden checklist. No surprise “that’s technically outside the package” at the end.
